Summer Offerings

During a time of school closures due to Covid-19, Rolling Hills Prep and Renaissance Schools have proven to be a model for Distance Learning. Our schools have implemented a model that encourages a high degree of engagement and consistency to maintain academic and social-emotional programming. Major components of our distance learning plan include utilizing multi-modes of learning tools to enhance the virtual learning experience.  Students are taught live by a teacher and include interactive video labs, in-class discussions and time for independent work and review.

We are pleased to offer the below distance learning courses for the Summer of 2020.

Biology - Course Fee: $1,477

Please note: Rolling Hills Prep and Renaissance Students must first complete Chemistry as a prerequisite for taking this course.

This course will explore the fundamental question of what Life is -- at a molecular, cellular, organism, and ecosystem/biosphere level. The Big Ideas covered include the Evolution of life on Earth, the Diversity of life (from single-celled protozoa and inanimate viruses to complex, living Ecosystems), Genetics and Inheritance of Traits, in addition to Human Anatomy & Physiology. The class will include online lectures, break-out session discussions, mini-projects, quiz games, hands-on modeling, and a strong laboratory component, using virtual lab simulations and experiments. In addition, we will aim to conduct some wet labs (dissections in school), provided some of the current limitations are lifted and we are able to safely access the school facilities. The ultimate focus of this course is to see how biology relates to real-life applications.

Some of the real-life phenomena we will investigate are:

  • How plants make their own food via photosynthesis and are the producers for all other life
  • How global warming bleaches and degrades our coral Reefs, the richest biomes in our oceans
  • How molecular genetics can solve crimes
  • How genetic engineering can manufacture life-saving medicines, clones beagles and possibly even bring back the Woolly Mammoth from extinction.
