Summer programming includes classes, school-hosted programming, and programming provided by trusted partners. Some programs, such as our summer school courses, allow for school credit or service hours.

 

Summer School Classes

 

Biology: Available to rising Juniors, Biology is offered as a five-week, condensed course. Students will learn the same material that is covered during the school year and are able to free up a block for an additional elective or support block. This course is highly demanding, meeting for 5 hours per day for 5 weeks, Monday through Friday.

Everlead 2020: Creating a Sustainable Future

Rolling Hills Prep is proud to partner with Everlead, an international educational company, for the second year of a cross-cultural, globally grounded summer program. Students will have the opportunity to work with students from Chengdu, China to explore the evolving and extremely urgent needs of the scientific field of sustainability. To explore this global phenomenon, students will examine local sustainability initiatives, learn about state-of-the-art technology and strategies, and explore the outcomes of leading a more sustainable life. 

 

Students will also learn valuable interpersonal skills by collaborating with students from China to understand a topic that affects every nation on Earth. This cross-cultural exposure will prove to be crucial as future generations work together to correct the trends of environmental destruction and pollution.

Service Learning Program

Behind on service learning hours? This two-week Service Learning Opportunity is an excellent opportunity for students to satisfy their graduation requirement of 30 service hours per year while having a positive impact on our community. Each day, students will complete 6 hours of community service, gaining 60 hours over 2 weeks (2 years worth of hours!) All trips will be chaperoned by RHP/REN faculty members. Note: this opportunity is only open to high schoolers, as many volunteer organizations have minimum age requirements.

Discover LA

We are lucky to call Los Angeles, one of the largest and most diverse cities in the world, home. There is limitless history, knowledge, culture and beauty all around us, but it can be hard to find the time to appreciate all of this. During this two-week camp, students will visit various places around LA that exemplify its cultural and natural beauty. From the star-studded sidewalks of Hollywood Blvd. to the breathtaking cliffs of Palos Verdes, students will learn the rich history of LA while experiencing first-hand some of what makes Southern California the best place on Earth.

Minecraft Modding with TechLX

Minecraft in school?! Yep! In this fun and practical two-week camp, students will learn the basics of JavaScript coding while creating their very own Minecraft world. Using programming fundamentals such as functions, variables, loops and conditionals, students will use a unique platform called VanillaMod to convert their JavaScript code into a Minecraft universe. 

 

By the end of the 1-week camp, students will have harnessed Minecraft as a game engine to build an Adventure Map. Example projects include Parkour Maps, Battle Arenas and Role-Playing Games. Best of all, students can invite their friends to come experience their creations via the TechLX Minecraft Server!

 

Course Outcomes

  1. Students will utilize programming fundamentals: functions, variables, loops and conditionals.
  2. Students will design a game using the Principles of Design Thinking from Stanford’s d.school.
  3. Students will become familiar with basic graphic design by creating pixel art for their Minecraft Resource Pack.
