Cell Phones and Texting

Students may not receive phone calls or text messages at any time during class (even from parents). In the case of an emergency, the office should be called, not the student's cell. All phones must be off during all classes/class time, including Physical Education, After School Program, Theater Rehearsal, and/or Athletics. Cell phones can be used only during the extended morning break or during lunch. Students caught using their phones for any reason including text messaging or surfing the internet during class time will have their phones confiscated and brought to the office. For the first offense, students will be required to leave the cell for 24 hours. For a second offense, the cell will be confiscated for 48 hours. For a third offense, parents will be contacted and requested to keep the cell at home for a week. Chronic violations beyond that will require a conference with parents and potential additional sanctions.

Plagiarism

Plagiarism is the misrepresentation of another's academic or artistic work as one's own. Plagiarism includes the copying of another student's homework (with or without consent), or the copying of text or ideas without the use of quotation marks and citation from a published/online work. First offense will result in a zero and/or contact home. Second offense will result in suspension, contact home, and letter in student's file.

Parking Lot Safety

Students and parents are required to drive very slowly (about walking pace) in and around the parking lot, as there are often many other students in the area. There is NO student drop off or parking permitted on Palos Verdes Drive North or on adjacent side streets. Do not cut through adjacent side streets. Follow directions issued at the beginning of the school year and posted on white boards regarding appropriate pick-up procedures.

The school monitors the use of the school parking lot and neighborhood areas surrounding the school as required by the City Conditional Use Permit (CUP). All students, parents, and visitors to campus must honor requests by school and security personnel when they are in or around the parking lot before, during, or after school, or a school-sponsored event. All vehicles that regularly enter and leave campus must have an RHP decal displayed on the rear of the vehicle.

Students may not park in the faculty parking lots (upper campus) in front of the school or in the football field lot. All students who drive to school must park on the road leading to our lower campus ("the hill"). Students must drive slowly (walking pace) in the lot and on the hill at all times. There is absolutely no parking in lower campus driveways at any time. Students found violating these rules will face disciplinary action and/or loss of privileges.

iPods and MP3 players

The same rules apply to iPods and music listening devices as to cell phones. Students may use these only during the extended morning break or during lunch. For the first offense, they will be required to leave them with the office for 24 hours. For a second offense, the equipment will be confiscated for 48 hours. For a third offense, parents will be contacted and requested to keep the equipment at home for a week. Chronic violations beyond that will require a conference with parents and potential additional sanctions.

Attendance and Tardiness

Regular attendance is a school requirement and students are expected to fulfill all their school obligations including attending classes, labs, assemblies, practices, rehearsals, games, field trips, and personal appointments with teachers. Since class discussion is a vital aspect of the learning process, student participation contributes directly to the success of each class.

Even if excused, students may not miss more than 6 classes per trimester in any one subject (4 classes in Trimester III) and still automatically pass that course (this includes Physical Education). Under such circumstances, an "Incomplete" may appear on a transcript until a parent conference is completed reviewing the details of the absences, and may become an "F" if insufficient work has been completed to merit a passing grade.

Punctuality is a sign of respect for teachers and classmates and demonstrates a readiness to learn. It is expected that all RHP students will arrive on time for all their school commitments, from the beginning of the school day until its end. Students arriving after 8:00 AM must go directly to the office for a re-admit slip which they must take to their first block teacher in order to be marked present at school. Teachers are instructed not to admit students to class without a readmit slip, and tardy students may be asked to wait to enter the classroom if the teacher feels their entrance may be disruptive to the flow of the class.

Students arriving at school after 10:00 AM or leaving before 12:00 PM are considered absent and may be restricted from participating in extra-curricular activities (including athletics) for that day.

Dress Code

The dress code at RHP is relatively informal: clothing should not distract from the learning process or pose a safety and/or health concern. Items that are not acceptable in our dress code include but are not limited to:

  • Inadequate foot protection
  •
  • Wearing hats inside buildings
  •
  • Unclean items
  •

Clothing should not be:

  • Too tight, too loose, or too revealing
  •
  • Torn, ripped, raw edges, or without hems (even if sold in that condition)
  •
  • Featuring offensive writing or pictures
  •
  • Tube tops, halter tops
  •
  • Undergarments worn as the top layer or be easily visible
  •
  • "Field Trip Attire" is a collared shirt tucked-in, tailored slacks, and neat shoes for guys and dress or dress slacks or skirt with blouse -not t-shirt- and neat shoes for girls. The school reserves the right to make the determination if items violate the dress code.
  •

P.E. Clothes

Students must wear an approved RHP P.E. uniform with their names clearly marked and the appropriate exercise / athletic shoes. The approved uniform includes those items sold or printed by the School as well as any navy, gray or white colored exercise pants or shorts.

*Chronic failure to wear appropriate clothing for physical education classes may result in a consequence for the student including loss of credit or detention.

Grading

At the end of each trimester, the teachers give each student a final letter grade in each subject area. At mid-year, the School sends a narrative comment for each subject. At the end of the third trimester letters are sent by the student's advisor to present a review of the year in all areas of school life. Grades are calculated as follows:

  • A Excellent achievement: A 93-100 A- 90-92
  •
  • B Above average achievement: B+ 87-89 B 83-86 B- 80-82
  •
  • C Average achievement: C+ 77-79 C 73-76 C- 70-72
  •
  • D Below average achievement: D+ 67-69 D 63-66 D- 60-62
  •
  • F Failure
  •
