In 2007 a longtime dream of the school founders was realized when Rolling Hills Prep moved onto its permanent home on Palos Verdes Drive North. Located on 20 verdant acres, the campus is conveniently located on the northern edge of the Palos Verdes Peninsula.
The school site was formerly occupied by housing for the Long Beach Naval Shipyard. In order to move onto the property, 76 of the pre-existing homes were demolished, with 90% of the material being recycled or reused. Utility lines were installed along with modular classroom buildings. Extensive landscaping and tree planting transformed the site, and outdoor athletic facilities were constructed, thanks to the generosity of the Gaudenti family.
Although the school functions beautifully as it is now established, there are detailed plans for long-term capital improvements. Families who wish to make the dream of permanent buildings come true are encouraged to make a donation toward that goal. More information is available from the Advancement Office.
Among the future capital projects for the school are the following:
- Construction of the Learning Center, a building that will hold various study spaces, meeting rooms and the library/learning center. Designed by architects Bryant, Palmer, Soto, the building will be LEED Gold and will feature an iconic tower that will become the new symbol of the school.
- Installation of a traffic signal at the school's entry to improve traffic flow and safety.
- Installation of new sewer and water main lines (the onsite infrastructure is already in place) routed around the adjacent federal property. This is a requirement of the Defense Department.
- Construction of additional classroom buildings on both sides of the Learning Center.
- Construction of a theater complex, with performance spaces and art studios.
- Construction of an athletic complex, with indoor athletic courts and locker rooms.
- Refurbishment of the homes remaining on the lower section of the property for reuse, either as educational spaces or as faculty or artist-in-residence housing.
Watch for more information about a future Capital Campaign that will continue the exciting journey of RHP into the future. That campaign will provide opportunities to leave a legacy of learning to the students at Rolling Hills Prep for today and for many generations to come.
