Athletics
Our
approach to athletics allows for students to develop all four qualities
emphasized in RHP's mission: disciplined minds, sound character, healthy
bodies and creative spirits. The aim of the athletics programs at RHP
is to complement the lessons learned in the academic classrooms and in
outdoor education: hard work combined with healthy enjoyment; discipline
combined with creativity and enthusiasm; and competitive spirit combined
with sportsmanship, cooperation, and teamwork.
RHP offers interscholastic sports, intramurals, fitness programs, and
individual sports for the varsity athlete as well as for the recreational
athlete. Coaches actively develop students' skills, self-confidence, commitment,
and camaraderie from season to season. In the middle school, RHP offers
the following interscholastic sports for both boys and girls: volleyball,
basketball, soccer, and cross-country. Students compete in the South Bay
Middle School League.
The
middle school operates a no-cut policy for sports teams, and typically
over 85% of middle schoolers take part in one or more interscholastic
teams each year. Intramural sports include flag football, cross-country,
hockey, softball, and baseball.
At the upper school level, varsity teams are offered in volleyball, football,
soccer, basketball, softball, baseball, and cross-country. JV teams are
offered in basketball. We encourage participation in athletics, and because
of our small size, many students who might not have considered competitive
athletics at a larger school, can rise to great heights at our school.
Over 50% of upper school students at RHP participate in one or more interscholastic
teams each year. RHP competes against similar-sized schools in the Harbor
League and in Division V of the California Interscholastic League's Southern
Section, where the school has appeared in six semi-finals and three championship
finals in recent years.
