Rolling Hills Prep has become a power in 8-man football in a very short time, due to our dedicated coaching staff, hardworking athletes and tremendous parental support. Game days bring a spirit of excitement that we encourage you not to miss.

Varsity Football started with 12 determined young men in 2003. Because of the size of the school, we compete in the CIF (California Interscholastic Federation) eight-man football division, against schools of similar size and background. The team has improved steadily through the years and in 2006-07 was Harbor League Champion and nationally ranked, at 16th in the nation.

Gaudenti Field, where the team plays, is recognized as one of the best in 8-man football, providing a great experience for players and spectators. For the second year in a row the 8-man All Star game has been played on our campus because of the excellent facilities.

Four RHP alumni are currently playing college football at prestigious colleges and universities.

Frank Frisina has coached the Huskies since 2004, and has been Head Coach since 2005. Formerly he coached basketball at Mary Star of the Sea High School, and was very involved in Pop Warner and CYO football. He runs his own insurance business and is devoted to the Prep football effort.

The Husky Offensive Coordinator is Dan Spahr, who has been with the program since 2003. He works as a product design engineer and was a football coach for many years at South Torrance High School. RHP Athletic Director Brian Knigin says "He's a real teacher. He really enjoys teaching the team members the correct way to play."

Zach Zuvich is an Assistant Coach, working with the linemen. He attended RHP for a year then played high school varsity football locally for four years. He is playing football in college and is very knowledgeable about the sport.

Torey Frisina is an Assistant Coach, working with the secondary. The son of Head Coach Frank Frisina, he was the Prep starting varsity quarterback for four years. Torey was an all-CIF football player his senior year, as well as the team MVP, and was recruited to play football at University of Redlands, but an injury brought him back to attend college locally while he's recovering.

Matt Trites is an Assistant Coach, serving as equipment manager and as the unofficial trainer. He is the father of two RHP alums, one of whom was recruited and now plays football at Whittier College.

Dr. Bill Lang, RHP parent, serves as team doctor, advising the team on health and injury rehabilitation issues.

Coach Frisina points out that the Huskies missed the playoffs during the 2008 season by one game. He says: "We were in a rebuilding mode after losing eight senior players. We are now looking forward to great successes in the years ahead."

Eight-man Football Differences

  • 8-man is played on a shorter and narrower field, 80 yards long by 40 yards wide. The hash marks are 15 yards in from each sideline and are 10 yards apart.
  • Team boxes extend from the 25 yard line to the opposite 25 yard line.
  • Anytime after halftime, when one team gets ahead by 45 points or more, the game is ended.
  • Five players are required to be on the L.O.S . Any player who is on the end of the L.O.S is an eligible receiver. All 3 backs are also eligible receivers.
  • Any numbered jersey may be worn by any player, regardless of position played.
  • Kickoffs are spotted at the 30 yard line. Some leagues require the receiving team to have at least 3 players within 10 yards of the ball at the kickoff. After a safety, the ball is spotted at the 15 yard line for the free kick.
  • If a kickoff goes into the end zone, it is brought out to the 15 yard line for play.
