A robust music program is a very important part of the RHP experience. Inspired by the creative spirits pillar, the program offers many opportunities for participation in varied musical genres. Many small-group options are available, providing high quality instruction in a way that brings out the best in students.

Cheryl Graue, who trained at the University of Southern California and performs regularly in the community as a pianist, vocalist and conductor, heads the music program and directs the chorus. She enjoys refining the skills of students with previous musical experience, as well as encouraging those with no musical background.

The concert band is directed by Benny Golbin, who has a Masters from the New England Conservatory of Music, and has recorded independently and with many artists at home and abroad. The garage band is under the leadership of Mike McLinden, a renowned bass player who is in high demand in Los Angeles and around the globe.

Music classes form a key component of the arts curriculum. In middle school, all seventh graders take a music fundamentals class that explores key concepts through a variety of methods including singing and tone chimes. Theory, harmony and note reading are introduced while more advanced students improve their sight-reading skills. Students experience performing with a group, developing a sense of ensemble as well as confidence. Eighth graders can opt for a project-based class where students create their own performance pieces for school events as well as completing a composition, music video or recording project.

In upper school, all ninth graders take music appreciation where students develop critical thinking skills through exposure to some of the great masterpieces of musical literature. Voice I, II and III are electives where students learn the basics of healthy vocal technique through daily warm-ups and personalized instruction as they explore a variety of repertoire. Audition and performance techniques are taught in a non-threatening and supportive environment. This course is open to students with previous singing experience as well as those who consider themselves non-singers.

Further musical options available to students of all grade levels include chorus, concert band (beginning and advanced) and garage band. Sign-ups for these groups begin in June for the following school year and continue through September.

Performance opportunities abound at RHP for musicians and performers of all types. Annual events showcasing student talent include International Day and Grandparents Day in the fall, two talent shows (or Coffee Houses) and Classical Night in January. The spring musical provides an opportunity for students to participate in a high quality theatrical production. Open to all grade levels by audition, students enjoy the opportunity to perform in San Pedro's historic Warner Grand Theater.
